Write It Right: The Power of a Good Artist Statement

Are you an artist who often struggles with writing your artist statement?

An artist statement is a key marketing piece for visual artists. It’s where viewers, collectors, and gallerists look to find meaning and the answers to these; what is being made, how it is being made, and why it is being made. Over the course of your career, thousands of eyes may land on your artist statement. It’s often read before most or any of your work has actually been seen, and other times simultaneously when looking at your work, therefore making an Artist Statement act as a type of portal, teacher, representative, and narrator all at once.

Making Your Own Opportunities With Public Art - Momentum 360 Program

Are you wondering about taking your artwork out of the gallery and into the public sphere?

Our region is growing and stepping onto a national stage for foodies, sport fans and, more and more, the arts. As the attention of both locals and the tourist market is captured by large-scale, public art there is a growing need to develop the next generation of local artists who can successfully create these works.

Long-lasting art careers require professional support and development that extends beyond the selection of materials. Artists seeking to move their work from the personal scale to the public scale require training in the business and planning skills necessary to work with civic groups, architects and municipal leaders in order to bring their work to our public spaces.

The Momentum 360: - Making Your Own Opportunities with Public Art course provides emerging Durham artists with the tools they need to succeed as public artists in our community and around our state.

What You'll Learn

  • How to identify which art calls are right for you.

  • How to develop your professional support materials (CV, slides, image list, references, letter of interest)

  • How to perform your due diligence (site visits, phone conferences, email inquiries, budgeting, accessibility studies and more) via in-class case studies

  • Budgeting, cost evaluations and financial aspects via case studies

  • Behind-the-scenes insights from public arts professionals (architects, engineers, arts administrators, vendors)

  • 'What Not To Do’: business school-style case studies of successful and unsuccessful projects

  • Participants will work on and complete a real, live public art call with the support and assistance of the instructors! Many participants choose to submit their project to the call and past participants have sucessfully been chosen as lead and team artists on submitted calls. Participant outcomes will vary, but we encourage participants to submit.

This full 6-week course will be delivered live in a virtual classroom and will include interactive elements. Participants will also receive one-on-one mentoring and peer-to-peer connections.

To get the most out of this class, participants are encouraged to set aside 1-2 hours per week (outside of class time) to work on their art calls and other class activities.

The class will also include optional in-person field trips and site visits.

This program is sponsored by the City of Durham’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development. Priority will be given to artists that live or work in Durham county, but all artists are invited to apply.

Zero To Newsletter in Just One Day

graphic advertising the Zero To Newsletter class for artists

Email marketing is inexpensive and one of the best ways to engage with a client or customer base. Emails cansell current work, direct customers to event registration, show off new work and sell tickets. Email newsletters work to share information and keep clients engaged every day.

So, why don’t you have a newsletter? Put all your worries away and take this three-hour IN PERSON course to begin sending regular emails to your customer base. You'll recieve hands-on instruction and create your first newsletter in the class. If you are 'technology challenged' this course is even for you. Many participants send their first newsletter before the class is over!

This course is for you if you are a visual artist, fine craft artist, musician, performer or photographer. You’ll learn about newsletter templates that will help you to create regular communication with your customers, free services you can use to send an email and what to talk about when you don't think you have anything to talk about. Whether you want to improve increase sales, communicate a show or exhibit schedule or other information, a professional email newsletter is not as intimidating as you may have thought.

Each participant will need to come to the class with a wifi-enabled laptop and be ready to create their first newsletter during the workshop. We’ll discuss various free platforms, how often to send a newsletter and how to convert your newsletter to a blog post or site update. Don’t have a mailing list? Don’t worry, we’ll talk about that as well.

Each participant should bring:

  • a wifi enabled laptop

  • digital files of 4-6 images of either current work, you performing, you teaching, etc.

Copyright 101 for Artists

Are you confused about how copyright law applies to your art or craftwork?

This workshop will answer your legal questions about copyright, trademark, the public domain, and how to protect your work. You’ll hear the answers to questions like:

  • Do I have to do anything to copyright my work?

  • What’s the difference between copyright and trademark?

  • Can I use an image/song/article in my work, or do I have to ask permission?

  • What is in the public domain?

  • What can I do to protect my work from others using it?

  • What goes into creating a great trademark?

  • How can choosing the right trademark help me?

Join lawyers Pamela Chestek of Chestek Legal and Brandon Huffman of Odin Law for a discussion of the legal issues affecting creative work. The lawyers will lead an open discussion on the most recent state of the law, so bring your questions and experiences and gain some insight into how the law might apply in your field.

Anyone who does creative work or who works with the creative works of others will, at some point, run into a situation that will require some knowledge of what intellectual property is and isn’t. This will be a great opportunity to become familiar with the general principles and learn from others’ experiences.

Please note our speakers will not be able to provide direct legal advice on specific situations. All questions answered and information provided will be of a general nature and does not create an attorney-client relationship with attendees. This session will not be recorded.
