Legally Speaking: Copyright, Trademark, and Right of Publicity

What rights do you have to your music? What rights do you need to perform the work of others? Did you know there are separate rights attached to the words, the music, the performance itself…and more? Join Shawn Nolan and Amanda Whorton for a frank discussion of “The Big Three - Copyright, Trademark, and the Right of Publicity” - the three areas of the law that relate to 99% of all music related rights, followed by Q&A.

Workshop leaders, Shawn Nolan and Amanda Whorton, bring years of experience representing music clients, large and small, and bring an experienced, but practical approach to these sometimes complicated issues.

This discussion will be beneficial for all musicians who want to become more knowledgeable in the music business or want to transition from a hobby to a professional music career, as well as those interested in expanding their general knowledge of customary music business practices and entertainment law including managers, music marketing persons and attorneys.

About Shawn Nolan

A veteran of the music industry, Shawn's 30+ years of experience includes VP and Director positions with Sub Pop Records and Mammoth Records, ownership of a successful artist management company, a Governor position on the Pacific NW Chapter Board of the Grammy Association, and ownership of a law practice solely representing clients in the entertainment industry.  A sample of current clients includes Merge Records, Sylvan Esso, Japanese Breakfast, MOOG Music, The Weather Station, Flock of Dimes, METZ, Psychic Hotline Records, Bonny Light Horseman, Lido Pimienta, Andy Shauf, Hiss Golden Messenger, U.S. Girls, and Fruit Bats, in addition to a variety of record, publishing, placement, and management companies and producers, lighting and set designers. More.

About Amanda Whorton

Amanda’s practice focuses on music, entertainment, and intellectual property, and among her clients have been musicians, television and radio stations, artists, filmmakers, and game developers. Amanda’s passion for her music, entertainment, and intellectual property clients stems from her passion for storytelling.
