Maker Spaces And Craft Facilities

Triangle ArtWorks has compiled a list of makerspaces to make it easier to find spaces to create on your own, without initial outlay of capital.  We want to keep this list as inclusive, complete and current as possible—if the information for your organization/business needs to be edited or you would like your organization/business to be added to this list, shoot us an email.

Cary

Cary Arts Center

Open arts studio passes can be purchased at the Cary Arts Center. Metals and jewelry, glass, sewing, and clay passes can be obtained upon completion of class prerequisites. The Open Studios provide access to necessary tools, equipment, and supplies for purchased. Art studio passes are available to the public. The Art Open Studio holds both portrait and painting group opportunities. Website.


Chapel Hill / Carrboro

Ceramics Studio at The Arts Center

The Ceramics Studio at the Arts Center allows members of the community to sign up for an open ceramics studio on a monthly basis upon completion of a separate ceramics class. Open studio time is also allotted to those currently enrolled in a ceramics class to practice what they are being taught. Monthly open studio access covers projects completed within the month for which access is purchased. Website

Kenan Makerspace

The Kenan Makerspace is in UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan Science Library and is available to be used by current UNC students, faculty, and staff. Equipment includes 3D printers, scanners, sewing machines, and a soldering station; usage of the sewing machines and soldering station requires training. Website


Durham

Claymakers

The Wheel and Hand Building Studios of Claymakers are available for the independent use of community renters during Open Studio Hours. A variety of clays, glaze materials, kilns, and tools and supplies are available to be purchased in studio. The Wheel Studio has various electric wheels and two large worktables and the Hand Building Studio has a slab roller, extruder, tile press and worktables. Website

Carolina Stained Glass

Carolina Stained Glass provides the opportunity for individuals to customize and design the stained glass pieces they would like as well as the opportunity to take classes that teach the process of creating stained glass projects for individuals to carry out on their own. Website

Durham Arts Council

The Prince Graphic Studio of the Durham Arts Council has open hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for those enrolled in painting or drawing classes through Durham Arts Council. DAC also provides access to the photo/digital facility for anyone enrolled in a darkroom/digital lab supported class; cameras must be self provided. The clay studio is accessible for open use for students enrolled in pottery courses and clay, storage, glaze, and kiln firing are provided by the council. Durham Arts Council’s two dance studios are both available for open rental on weekdays when they are not being used. The Rollins studio is 1,464 square feet and Wachovia is 1,425 square feet. Website

Durham Public Library

The Durham Public Library hosts MakerDays in which access to a 3D printer is offered on a monthly basis. MakerDays include assistance in designing a file to be printed and printing users’ designed models; currently the largest dimensions possible to be accommodated by the 3D printer are 9.9 x 7.8 x 5.9 inches. Website

Hanger6

Located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, Hangar6 offers entrepreneurs, start-ups and businesses a local prototyping space to build prototypes on their own schedule. Website

The Scrap Exchange

The Scrap Exchange provides open studio opportunities in two maker spaces: one in the Make n Take Room and the other in the Design Center. The Make ’n’ Take Room provides participants’ access to the scrap materials in the space to make whatever they choose; tools (including staplers and scissors) are also available for use. The Design Center equipment includes sewing machines, a button maker, a die cut machine, and a hot t-shirt press. A library containing books about arts and crafts in many languages is also available for users to utilize. To ensure familiarity with the sewing machine and other tools in the Design Center, orientation and trainings are available to be added to a list of drop-in users. Website

Splatspace

Equipment available at Splatspace (previously known as Durham Makerspace) include a CNC router; laser and vinyl cutters; 3D printing; wood working materials and various kinds of saws; a drill press and electric drills; and electronic materials including a soldering and rework station, an oscilloscope, power supplies and more. Full member benefits include 24/7 access to the space but members of the general public can attend weekly meetings, visit the “hackerspace” during open hours, and participate in workshops or events that are available to the public. Website


Raleigh

NC State University Crafts Center and C:LAB

The North Carolina State University Crafts Center is one of the largest university crafts centers in the nation. The Center provides hands-on, immersive, life-long learning skills to NC State students, faculty and staff, affiliates, alumni and the general public to support research, enhance critical thinking through creativity, and strengthen personal and professional development. The Crafts Center is a place where creative skill and self-expression are fostered through making in a variety of media: clay, wood, jewelry, glass, fibers, photography, and mixed media. The Center combines traditional craft media with art and new technologies. The C:LAB makerspace provides classes in digital media with a focus on personal and professional branding/marketing, new media, research, prototyping and fine craft. Website

Pullen Arts Center

Pullen Arts Center offers classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced students in pottery, jewelry, painting, drawing, printmaking, and bookmaking in our fully equipped studios. Students can come in to use the studio outside of class time for the duration of their class. Following class completion, students aged 16 and up can access our studios and equipment through our Studio Card Program. Studio Cards can be purchased on a 6 month basis ($45 Raleigh residents/$60 non-residents) or a yearly basis ($70 Raleigh residents/$85 non-residents). Each studio has its own rules and qualifying classes. Website

Sertoma Arts Center

Pottery Studio Cards can be purchased after attending qualifying class. Studio is available when classes are not in session at Sertoma Arts Center. Clay must be purchased from Sertoma and price includes glaze use and firing. Painting/Drawing studio memberships and mat cutting studio are also available for use after qualifying class. Website

ShopSpace

The ShopSpace facility features a comprehensive metal shop and focuses on forging, fabrication, knife making, and jewelry. We offer a variety of classes at all skill levels, along with access to the shop and equipment. For special projects, private consultation is also available. Website
