Record Labels

Triangle ArtWorks strives to provide basic information and links for all recording labels in the Triangle. We will work to keep our information updated, but obviously, you should contact the organizations directly for up-to-date information. Please inform us here, if you find any errors or omissions, or have resources to be added.

307 Knox Records – Durham-based.

Paradise of Bachelors is a Record Label, Recording Company, Soundsystem, and Archive located in the North Carolina Piedmont (Carrboro) and in the subluminal aether. We are dedicated to documenting, curating, and releasing under-recognized musics of the American vernacular, historical and contemporary alike, with an emphasis on the South—broadly defined—and its global sound diaspora. Drawing from our background as folklorists and collectors, with all our projects we endeavor to commit ourselves to in-depth, detailed contextual research and the presentation thereof, to careful and compelling curation and design, and to respectful and mutually beneficial collaborations with artists and other partners.

Cardigan Records – Cardigan Records is an independent record label based out of Durham, NC with a primary focus on artist development. We are interested in working with artists that have a strong work ethic and serious market potential.  Email.

Handz Up Entertainment. Durham-based. “Handz Up Entertainment is an enity created by Keivano and SJ to establish a medium where they and others can use their gifts and talents for God. Handz Up Entertainment not only aims to create music, but to build a means of effective ministry to serve their community, region, and ultimately, the world.”

Holidays for Quince Records. “Holidays for Quince Records is an independent record label founded in 2007 by Heather McEntire and Jenks Miller, and based in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina. Our annual output is select and minimal with a focus on local music from central North Carolina and the greater South. We offer a non-genre approach to releases and put our name and effort behind artists we believe inspire movement.”

Jamla Records – “Jamla Records is an independent record label founded by Grammy Award-winning producer 9th Wonder and home to many of today’s most talented hip hop and R&B artists.”

Merge Records – “Merge Records was started in the summer of 1989, by Laura Ballance & Mac McCaughan, the same summer they formed the band Superchunk in Chapel Hill, NC.  In 2014 Merge Records is celebrating its 25th birthday, and while our roster has changed, rotated, permutated and expanded over the last 25 years, the quality we look for in records as fans is still there in the music we put out on Merge.”

Potluck Foundation – PotLuck is a cooperative of musicians and artists motivated by the act of creating interesting works. Some may call us a “boutique” label, but we like to think of our collective as an umbrella gathering recorded sound compositions many times included with unique, tangible artifacts.

Robust Records – “Robust Records was founded in 2008 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina by Mitch Collman, a practicing cardiologist with a passion for local music. His goal is to foster the growth of aspiring artists and facilitate the spread of their music.”

Small Town Records – Duke University’s student-run record label.

Trekky Records – “Trekky Records is an independent record label based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The label was created in 2001 by Chapel Hill natives Martin Anderson and Will Hackney as an outlet for their friends’ music. The label has since grown into a prominent musical collective, known for releasing albums in a signature 3-part format which includes a vinyl record, a compact disc and an MP3 download.”

Urban Myth Recordings – Urban Myth is a label collective of (primarily) alt-singer-songwriters who gleefully leap across genre and international boundaries in search of our musical voices. Founded in 1996, UM has operated out of Toronto, Raleigh, NYC and DC but has now hopefully settled down in Durham for good!

Yep Roc Records – “Yep Roc Records believes in the vision of each of our Artists. We strive to serve each project based on its unique characteristics. Through strong promotional and marketing efforts, our goal is to reach as large an audience as possible with each new release. Yep Roc was founded in 1997 by Tor Hansen and Glenn Dicker, and is exclusively distributed through Redeye Distribution.”
