Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University– The Center for Documentary Studies works to promote, educate, and foster a culture of documentary making and appreciation. They also organize the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival as well as other programs through out the year. Website
Durham Film Office– The Durham Film Office promotes the City of Durham as a location for shooting films and commercials. Website
North Carolina Film Office– The NC Film office works to promote North Carolina as a destination for filmmakers by highlighting incentives and benefits, the varied locations of the state, and is home to the NC Reel Scout directory for personnel. Website
NC Film Office Directory– The NC Film Office maintains an online, searchable directory of film crew and production services. If you are in these fields, it is a good idea to be on this Directory. Website
Southern Documentary Fund– The Southern Documentary Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Durham. Since 2002 they have been supporting documentary makers across different media making work in and about the American South. The SDF supports documentary makers with advice and council as well as acting as a fiscal sponsor to help receive funds. Website
Triangle Regional Film Commission– The Triangle Regional Film Commission works to promote the 13 county area as a desirable place for filmmakers. They act as a liaison between production companies and locations to get filmmakers to the Triangle. Website
A/V Geeks– A collection of 23,000 vintage educational films on 16mm. Many, if not all, are very rare and can be seen few other places. A/V Geeks preserves the uniquity of these decades-old educational films and screens them often. Website
Screen/Society– Screen/Society is part of Duke’s Arts of the Moving Image Program that promotes “challenging and thought-provoking work” through local screenings. They organize the series Summer Days, Nasher Nights and Right! Camera! Action! Both in Durham. Website
Screenline– A Raleigh-based screenwriting group, Screenline welcomes writers of all experience levels. They meet monthly to discuss and critique screenplays. Website
Carolina Production Journal– A great source for production news in North and South Carolina, Carolina Production Journal also features profiles and interviews with news-makers in film, television, and theater. In print and online. Website
Burning Oak Studios– Burning Oak Studios is a Raleigh-based video and media production company who specialize in all kinds of digital media including documentaries, web design, marketing and more. Website
Centerline Digital– Centerline Digital is a Raleigh-based content marketing firm. Centerline was started in 1995 and has grown a lot in the years since their inception. Centerline Digital’s diverse team helps to bring many perspectives to the work they do and allows them to make interesting client-focused work. Footpath Pictures– Based in Raleigh, Footpath Pictures makes documentaries with a focus on telling the stories of nonprofit organizations and all the work they do. Website

Video Dialog Inc.– An award-winner production company, Video Dialog Inc. is based in downtown Durham. Video Dialog Inc.’s focus is on historical and educational documentaries. Their works include the documentary February One- The Story of the Greensboro Four about the 1960 sit-in protest at a Greensboro lunch counter, and Down Home a multi-disciplinary look at Jewish life in North Carolina. Blue Sky Film Festival– Blue Sky Film Festival is a Chapel Hill festival hosted at the Lumina Theatre. Blue Sky Film Festival highlights independent films and filmmakers with screenings and workshops. BSFF also supports The Arc of Orange County. Website
BrickFlix Film Festival– Founded in 2010, the Brickflix Film Festival shows short films made with and about LEGOs. It is held at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Website
Carrboro Film Festival– The long-running Carrboro Film Festival screens a variety of short films annually. The festival is held at the Carrboro Century Center in the heart of downtown Carrboro and is marked by their Kay Kyser awards. Website
Escapism Film Festival– Escapism Film Festival screens films of epic proportion and high adventure. From the obscure to the ubiquitous Escapism Film Festival brings rare 33mm films to life at the Carolina Theatre. Website
Full Frame Documentary Film Festival–This annual festival, called the premier documentary film festival in the US by the New York Times, features documentary filmmakers from around the world and focuses on creating a space for filmmakers and film lovers alike to enjoy and discuss the art of documentaries. Full Frame is a program of Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies. Website
North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival– International in scope, NCGLFF focuses on films highlighting and celebrating LGBTQ life. The festival screens short and feature length films as well as documentaries at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Website
Nevermore Film Festival– Screening new horror films that run the gamut from gory to suspenseful, the Nevermore Film Festival has been going strong for over a decade at the Carolina Theatre. Website
Cinema Overdrive– Cinema Overdrive is a monthly series at the Colony Theatre in Raleigh that shows the best and brightest in cult and exploitation films on original 33mm. The series also features great trailer packages and posters made for each screening. Website
The Cinema, Inc.– Raleigh’s longest running film series and a dedicated non-profit, The Cinema, Inc. brings classic films to the Rialto in Raleigh monthly. Tickets are sold by the season and their line up is quite impressive. Website
Cool Classics at the Colony– The Colony’s Cool Classics series brings films like Fargo and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure back to the big screen. Cool Classics shows a diverse collection of films monthly and can be enjoyed by first timers and the initiated alike. Website
Retrofantasma– Retrofantasma is a monthly series of classic horror movies. Showing films as diverse as Dune and Chopping Mall Retrofantasma is bringing films you can’t catch anywhere else around. Monthly at Durham’s Carolina Theatre. Website
